CALL FOR NOMINATIONS!

The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers is currently gathering nominations to recognize and honour Edmonton’s most outstanding citizens who through extraordinary community service, arts and culture, industry and business have made exemplary contributions in our city to enhance the quality of life for Newcomers and Canadians alike.

We encourage all members of the Edmonton community to look at their neighbors, colleagues, community leaders, family & friends, industry partners, employers and any other associations who could potentially qualify for a 2017 RISE Award.

 


 

2017 RISE AWARDS CATEGORIES AND CRITERIA

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

This award will recognize an individual who demonstrates a commitment of commendable service to the community, through, but not limited to: Intercultural leadership, recreation, education, health, mentorship, social, educational and spiritual growth.

1. Nominee can be born in or outside of Canada

2. Nominee demonstrates understanding and compassion towards addressing one or more community issue

3. Nominee demonstrates ongoing commitment to community service

4. Nominee can provide examples of aspirations and experience

5. Identify the impacts of their work which benefit one or more ethno-cultural group, Newcomer or Immigrant communities with clear and measurable outcomes

RBC RISING STAR YOUTH AWARD

This award will recognize the accomplishments of a youth who demonstrates leadership and the promise of continuing, maturing and significant contributions to the community.

1. Nominee must have been born outside of Canada

2. Nominee is between the ages of 15-25 years

3. Nominee demonstrates personal growth, through, but not limited to: academic successes, arts and culture, recreation, health promotion and/or career readiness

4. Nominee has understanding and compassion towards diversity, cultural acceptance and advancement

5. The nominee demonstrates a commitment to leadership, community service and future aspirations

ARTS AND CULTURE AWARD

This award will recognize admirable contributions to Edmonton’s Arts and Culture community, through, but not limited to: visual, written, digital and performing arts

1. Nominee must have been born outside of Canada

2. Nominee demonstrates commitment to the promotion, teaching and sharing of their artistic disciplines throughout Edmonton to build awareness on the importance of arts and culture

3. Nominee can demonstrate artistic discipline through creative and/or multicultural achievements (i.e. music, dance, theatre, spoken word, written poetry, live visual arts, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, filmmaking, video, literature)

4. Nominee demonstrates experience in their field and a mastery of skill or high degree of expertise with a commitment to artistic development

5. Nominees body of work, artistic project or program greatly impacts the community

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

This award will recognize an outstanding individual who, over a significant period of time, has made substantial contributions to the greater Edmonton community in more than one, but not limited to; arts and culture, business, community service, health, education, recreation and social development.

1. Nominee must have been born outside of Canada

2. Ongoing commitment of civic engagement; with active contributions of at least 10 years

3. Contributions must be rooted in Edmonton, but may reach beyond the scope of the city

4. The nominee’s mastery of skill or high degree of expertise in their realm of specialization; with their actions resulting in tangible and measurable impacts to the community and/or beyond

5. Commitment towards their activities and possess outstanding qualities and characteristics

BUILDING FUTURES INDUSTRY AWARD

This award will recognize an outstanding group or organization who demonstrates a commitment of commendable service to the

community, through, but not limited to: Intercultural leadership, recreation, education, health, mentorship, social, educational and spiritual growth

1. Nominee must fall in one or more categories; ethno-cultural, non-profit or charitable organization, community philanthropy, art and culture, community league, volunteer, sports, education, heath and wellness groups

2. Nominee demonstrates on ongoing commitment to civic engagement

3. Nominee demonstrates understanding and compassion towards addressing one or more community issue

4. Nominee initiatives/activities must benefit one or more ethno-cultural group, Immigrant or Newcomer community

5. Identify the impacts of their work in the community with clear and measurable outcomes

WELCOMING WORKPLACE

This award recognizes an outstanding employer who demonstrates a committed to the successful placement, integration and retention of Newcomers in their workplace.

1. Nominee demonstrates a commitment to the successful placement, integration and retention of Newcomers

2. Nominee demonstrates a responsibility for enhancing diversity and cultural competence

3. Nominee demonstrations initiatives and practices which results in the fair and ethical treatment of Newcomers

4. Nominee demonstrates recognition of the skills and experience Newcomers bring to the workplace

5. Other elements of inclusion could include, but not limited to: cultural awareness training, provisions for religious/dietary practices, encourage inter-cultural leadership and awareness, celebration of language and cultural diversity

NOMINATION PROCESS

WHERE TO NOMINATE

Nominations can be made online using the interactive nomination form. Nominators have the ability to download the form

while gathering the required information and documentation before submitting the completed application.

Completed forms and supporting documents can also be emailed, mailed or dropped off in person at the following locations:

SELECTION PROCESS

1. An independent jury reviews all nominations and selects recipients who meet all criteria, based on the award category

2. The jury reserves the right to place nominees in another award category if they deem the criteria satisfactory

3. Nominees will receive a confirmation of submission

4. Award nominees will be contacted once selections have been made

5. Each award recipient will be provided with two (2) complimentary tickets to the RISE Awards. Additional tickets will be available for purchase

6. Award recipients and finalists will be announced on the RISE Awards website
